Located in Springs near the historic district, this garden was developed in close collaboration with architect Bridget Benge (of Studio Artempo) and the client as part of a comprehensive renovation of the home. The landscape began with a series of seasonal container plantings around the pool and deck before evolving into a full-site master plan. The garden is conceived as a painterly, picturesque landscape—loosely planted and naturalistic, while maintaining a sense of composition and intention around the house.

The planting becomes progressively more informal as it moves away from the architecture. Near the house, carefully composed, pollinator-friendly plantings create a more curated and pictorial garden, while the outer areas transition into a wilder landscape that responds to the surrounding woodland. An unmowed grass meadow forms the backbone of the rear garden, incorporating native species including black raspberries, Rosa virginiana, and Spiraea alba. Along the borders and woodland edges, shade-tolerant species respond to the changing conditions, while the more open areas are planted for sun-loving species.

The garden was designed to have a natural sense of movement and seasonal change, while maintaining enough structure to feel intentional. In response to the client’s desire for greater seasonal color, later phases introduced additional perennials including Coreopsis and Echinacea, bringing brighter blooms and extended interest to the meadow and curated planting areas. The result is a garden that moves between the cultivated and the wild, connecting the architecture to its woodland setting while providing habitat and resources for pollinators.
